Safe Space

Hey Sunflowers,

So I have some excited news, I moved into a new apartment. Woohoo! cue my good sis Ari Lennox Well, I wish I could say my transition has been smooth but it has been anything but! Today we’re going to talk about how to use spaces to your benefit. This is just another thing I learned in Quarantine that I felt it was important to share.

Space can work for your benefit or your demise. Please note that these suggestions can all be done in the same room maybe just in different postures. It is unrealistic to assume everyone has different rooms to perform different tasks.

  1. Claim your sleep space and only sleep there!

This is probably the hardest thing to do! It is too easy to just work from the bed, watch movies from the bed, I mean sometimes I even eat in the bed (don’t judge me y’all!). In a world where we generally stay at home, we have to separate sleep time from life time. That means don’t do anything else but sleep in your bed! This will also help with insomnia if you’ve struggled with that!

2. Identify a work space and leave work there!

You all may not know this but I am a full-time law student. LOL! That means tons and tons of reading. I’ve found that identifying a workspace is the only thing that has kept me even seemingly sane. I’m putting a pretty significant amount of work into my desk area because I want to be excited to go handle work. So I’m planning to decorate it with art, maybe have a nice chair and a cute rug, do it up!! This should be a space that makes you happy because Lord knows sometimes you just want to leave work alone!

3. Find a peace place!

I did not realize how bad I needed a peace place. I was confusing this place with my sleep space for YEARS! Which is probably why whenever I’m stressed out I think a nap will fix it. This space is where you decompress. That will look different for everyone. For me it looks like meditation, sometimes silence, sometime music, sometimes Girlfriends, sometimes The Office. But it always looks like me seeking peace.

I hope these tips are helpful. I know I’ve been away for a minute but life has been a lot. This is a reminder that when you need to take time for you, TAKE IT! No one can fight for you like you! I love you sweet Sunflowers. Talk to you soon.

forever blooming,

Mikaela Amira
