Self-Love

Hey Sunnies,

Happy Valentine’s Weekend. Although the actual history of Valentine is unclear and questionable at best, it has become an excuse to love on those closest to us. Most people think of romantic love being celebrated on Valentine’s Day; however, it has become more and more popular to have things like Galentine’s Day parties. Well, what we don’t talk about enough is self-love. The kind of love that is essential to all other love. Self-love is the foundation for what we will accept from others in romantic relationships, friendships and even familial relationships.

Self-love is different than self-care. Self-love is a little more indulgent. It is doing for yourself what feels good and right, regardless of if it is actually good for you. This week self-love looks like splurging on skin care and getting the Method body wash from Target that I love so much. It also looks like trading my homework for watching the Super Bowl with my family. It doesn’t have to be a big grand gesture. It can be as simple as living the day with ease regardless of the consequences.

Even though this is extremely important, it must sit in balance like all other things. There is healthy self-love and there is this idea that no one or nothing can ever love you; that only you can bring yourself the feeling of being loved. This is the kind of obsessive independence that doesn’t even allow us to open up enough to experience the love of others. There is also the fear of becoming so indulgent in your self-love that you lack the necessary discipline to live a healthy and balanced life.

At the end of the day, I hope you all take some time to love on you, the way you WANT to be loved. It is important. I love you allllll!

forever blooming,

Mikaela Amira
